Welcome to The Broke Architect, a site where I will share the various financial struggles and lessons I’ve learned. It is my hope that you can use this information to improve your own situation. So, if you are looking for light-hearted financial information disgusted as a storytelling blog, you have found the right place!

Hi, I am James (The Broke Architect), a husband and architect in the DC Metro area. My wife and I are on a mission to achieve financial independence as soon as possible. We have not set a deadline for achieving independence because we are currently focused on paying-off our mortgage by 2023. Working to obtaining financial freedom is a difficult path to stay on, due to fact that most of the systems were set-up to ensure that we remain in debt. It’s just something I have learned along the away.

I have been a spender for as long as I can remember. I was contently buying things in an effort to improve my social status and to impress and/or to keep-up with other people. It took it me many years to get comfortable in my own skin and accept my social standing.

After I got married to Mrs. Broke Architect, I made a concerted effort to change my bad money habits. I had to. Getting married forced me to become more responsible. I could not rely on someone to fix my situation, it had to be me. Plus, I got tired of hearing myself say I just need to make enough money to pay my bills.  So, I began reading books on money and investing to educated myself on the subject. I took the knowledge I learned and applied it to my life and to-date, we have paid off $160,000 in debt.

I hope that you will join me on this path to financial freedom. Together, we can change our family trees and improve our community.
